According to the United Nations, the term 'violence against women' means any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life. Violence against women shall be understood to encompass, but not be limited to, the following:

  1. Physical, sexual and psychological violence occurring in the family, including battering, sexual abuse of female children in the household, dowry-related violence, marital rape, female genital mutilation and other traditional practices harmful to women, non-spousal violence and violence related to exploitation;
  2. Physical, sexual and psychological violence occurring within the general community, including rape, sexual abuse, sexual harassment and intimidation at work, in educational institutions and elsewhere, trafficking in women and forced prostitution;
  3. Physical, sexual and psychological violence perpetrated or condoned by the State, wherever it occurs.

Women are entitled to the equal enjoyment and protection of all human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural, civil or any other field. These rights include:

  • The right to life;
  • The right to equality;
  • The right to liberty and security;
  • The right to equal protection under the law;
  • The right to be free from all forms of discrimination;
  • The right to the highest standard attainable of physical and mental health;
  • The right to just and favourable conditions of work;
  • The right not to be subjected to torture, or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

The inability to treat women as a human is so pervasive in modern society, that it is hard to even believe that we live in the 21st century.

Violence against women in culture manifests in two ways

In public or private spaces, violence against women and girls is a human rights violation
of pandemic proportions that takes place in every country around the world.

Violence against women and girls is rather normalised
and even propagated, but why?

In developing countries, state and cultural traditions often suppress women by direct force. While in advanced countries, where women and girls have access to education and freedom to make their own choices, the modern culture is being shaped in a way to control them coercively using a 'soft power'. The 'soft power' is a type of political force that is designed to shape the preferences of the target audience through appeal and attraction to get the desirable outcomes. This manipulation is used to make victims, to feel confident that they are acting on their own free will. The ultimate goal of such practice, to remain the power and control without any significant force or interference.

The nature of woman is naturally less aggressive and competitive compared to men's. And in the case of when women would have achieved an equal contribution to the decision-making process in all political, social and economic spheres, it would become almost impossible to maintain the wars, exploitation, and the social inequality. Women's social citizenship status as a 'second class' has been artificially developed by a group of individuals who were and still are interested in maintaining social imbalance. Imbalance always brings chaos, which creates uncertainty. Uncertainty grows fear. And the fearful people are easy to control, manipulate and exploit.

How can we end violence against women in culture?

Today's people differ from the people who lived 200, 1000 or 5000 years ago. The history provides countless evidence of evolutionary cycles through which civilisations rise and fall. An individual, as well as a society, often do make mistakes when choosing based on minimal knowledge, inexperience or negative influence coming from the distorted source.
The inability to oversee the consequences of a ONE misinterpreted idea, word or action often turns progressive society towards regression. The evolution continues, only when the old knowledge gets an upgrade with the new one. Something that people used to tolerate in the past, today it is seen as a completely inhumane and unacceptable practice.

Let's take a look at social behaviour change over the recent years towards animals and the environment. Such things as veganism, minimalism, zero-waste and eco-friendly lifestyle have already become a norm. Today's people are more developed and advanced compared to our ancestors. Therefore we must learn to apply human behaviour towards each other.

People are NOT animals regardless of our biological relation to other life forms. We can make a choice towards good or evil, based on our knowledge and experience, while animals don't. Therefore every system or ideology of the past, which carries destructive behaviour patterns DO NOT fit into a new global community's agenda anymore.

Simple steps to eliminate violence against women and girls
from our daily lives

Violence and compassion both are products of our beliefs. Beliefs shape our thoughts, which lead to actions in developing our character and attitude. The less knowledge we operate with, the more radical views and toxic ideas we impose on selves and others.

Don't be ignorant

Some people may think if it doesn't affect me directly, then why should I bother caring about some sex-slaves in Thailand? Due to our purblind attitude, we barely can imagine that our family member or a friend can go on a vacation just to have 'some fun' with local girls, and after will carry no responsibility if one of them will get pregnant. Moreover, such people, in their home countries, often occupy decision making seats in government and corporate institutions. The objectified attitude towards females will directly impact all social, economic and legal decision they will make for the community you may live in, the workplace you or your wife, daughter or sister may work at, and the country's laws you live by.

Acknowledge the problem, and take personal responsibility to do everything you can for educating each member of your family and friends about gender equality and the importance of preventing the violence against women and girls in all forms. It's a small action, that will lead to a big difference.

Know by heart

  1. Today's girls and women must become free from being associated with the property, exploitation and discrimination by their family members, partners, and socially-toxic ideologies. They are not objects for a trade and economic exchange.
  2. A woman is a connecting element between the present and the future generation. Millions of mothers, daughters and sisters around the world suffer from domestic abuse, harassment on the streets and discrimination at the workplace.
  3. Women, as well as men, are both equally valuable creations of the higher universal consciousness and are equally contributing members of our society. Their unique differences are given not to weaken them, but to complement each other so both can evenly grow and flourish together.

It is time for personal and social transformations globally. The technological progress combined with the barbaric attitude doesn't make our civilisation advanced. It's time to upgrade our belief systems with compassion, empathy and love towards ourselves and others.
